Chapter 8: Internal Consistency

Internal Consistency

view all chapter tables | print this section

Internal consistency refers to the interrelatedness of the test items. In the case of a multidimensional instrument such as the Conners 4, the items comprising each scale are related mainly by their theoretical association to the underlying factor being measured. The higher the intercorrelation of the items on a scale, the higher the reliability coefficient, or measure of internal consistency. A common measure of internal consistency is coefficient alpha, which is a value that ranges from 0 (poor reliability) to 1 (perfect reliability; Cronbach, 1951). A desirable value for alpha (≥ .80) indicates that items relate to a common construct but are not so highly related as to indicate redundancy among the items.

Conventional reliability coefficients (i.e., coefficient alpha) are influenced by how interrelated the items are and by the number of items on the scale (John & Benet-Martinez, 2000), as well as the purpose of scale interpretation and the narrowness of the construct being measured. Coefficient alpha can underestimate internal consistency and often provides the lower bound estimate (Raykov, 1997; Viladrich, Angulo-Brunet, & Doval, 2017). Coefficient alpha is a widely reported coefficient in social and behavioral research and is therefore included in the results; however, an alternative metric is also reported for completeness. Coefficient omega is a measure of internal consistency reliability derived from confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) parameter estimates and designed for congeneric scales; it is an excellent alternative for measuring internal consistency (Graham, 2006; McNeish, 2018). As the Conners 4 items have four ordered categorical responses, coefficients alpha and omega are calculated based on the polychoric correlation matrix, a technique used to provide more accurate estimates for relations between ordinal items (Zumbo et al., 2007). Coefficient omega is interpreted in the same manner as coefficient alpha, such that values greater than or equal to .80 are desirable.

Additionally, the mean inter-item correlation (MIC), essential to an assessment of scale interrelatedness and item redundancy, is presented as another alternate estimate of internal consistency reliability. MIC differs from coefficient alpha, in that it does not take the scale length into account; it is a more easily interpretable measure of item homogeneity when scale lengths differ (Briggs & Cheek, 1986; Streiner, 2003). Ideally, MIC should not be lower than .20, as a value below this threshold signifies that items may not represent the same content domain (Piedmont, 2014). However, for assessments that measure broad constructs, wherein content coverage is meant to be exhaustive, MICs in the range of .15 to .20 are appropriate. For measurement of narrower constructs, higher MICs are expected (e.g., .40 to .50; Clark & Watson, 1995).

Internal consistency estimates for the Conners 4 are presented in Tables 8.1 to 8.3 for the Normative Samples and Tables 8.4 to 8.6 for the ADHD Reference Samples (see chapter 7, Standardization, for a description of the Normative and ADHD Reference Samples).

The reliability coefficients presented in these tables indicate that the Conners 4 has excellent internal consistency on all forms, across all age groups. Across all age groups and genders in the Normative Samples, the median coefficient omega was .94 (ranging from .79 to .98) for scales on the Conners 4 Parent, .95 (ranging from .81 to .98) for scales on the Conners 4 Teacher, and .90 (ranging from .77 to .96) for scales on the Conners 4 Self-Report. For the ADHD Reference Samples, the median coefficient omega was .93 (ranging from .86 to .97) for scales on the Conners 4 Parent, .95 (ranging from .81 to .98) for scales on the Teacher form, and .88 (ranging from .71 to .95) for the Conners 4 Self-Report. In summary, there is evidence of excellent internal consistency of the Conners 4 Parent, Teacher, and Self-Report scale scores.
