Appendix B: Confidence Intervals

Appendix B: Confidence Intervals

This appendix provides the 90% and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all T-scores for the Conners 4th Edition (Conners 4®) forms. The online scoring automatically includes the confidence interval based on the Normative Samples for every T-score; however, the user can choose whether to use 90% or 95% confidence intervals. (See chapter 3, Scoring and Reports, for details on scoring options.) The confidence intervals for the ADHD Reference Sample can be obtained by referencing the tables in this appendix. The confidence interval for a given T-score can be determined by following these steps.

Begin by finding the CI value:

  1. Find the correct table.

    1. For the Normative Sample, choose the appropriate table based on

      1. the length of the form (full-length Conners 4 or Conners 4®–Short),

      2. the rater (Parent, Teacher, or Self-Report),

      3. the scale being scored (Content Scales, Impairment & Functional Outcome Scales, DSM Symptom Scales), and

      4. the level of confidence to be used (i.e., 90% or 95%).

    2. For the ADHD Reference Sample, choose the appropriate table based on

      1. the length of the form (full-length Conners 4 or Conners 4–Short), and

      2. the rater (Parent, Teacher, or Self-Report).

  2. Select the appropriate column in the table.

    1. For the Normative Sample, choose the appropriate column based on

      1. the gender used for scoring (Combined Gender, Males, or Females), and

      2. the youth’s age.

    2. For the ADHD Reference Sample, choose the appropriate column based on

      1. the level of confidence to be used (90% or 95%),

      2. the gender used for scoring (Combined Gender, Males, or Females), and

      3. the youth’s age.

  3. Find the row that contains the scale.

Once you have the correct cell, calculate the CI as follows:

  1. Calculate the Lower Bound of the CI by subtracting the CI value from the obtained T-score.

  2. Calculate the Upper Bound of the CI by adding the CI value to the obtained T-score.

For example, on the full-length Conners 4, Parent ratings of an 11-year-old, using Combined Gender Normative Sample, resulted in an Impulsivity T-score of 72. To determine the 90% CI for this score, the interpreter refers to Table B.1. The CI value of 5 is found in the Impulsivity row, under the 90% CI column for ages 10 to 11 using Combined Gender norms. The CI is then calculated as follows:

  1. Lower Bound: 72 – 5 = 67

  2. Upper Bound: 72 + 5 = 77

The 90% CI for this parent’s rating of an 11-year-old who had an Impulsivity scale score of 72 is 67–77.
